Elefante Blanco 2009

elephante blanco 2009A quick one today on this inexpensive but very drinkable white. A bit of a dogs breakfast of varieties: Macabeo, Verdejo, Viura and Savignon Blanc, but don’t let put you off. The bottle looks sharp too, it would look great on display in a tiny laneway bar.

Pear and melon, slightly tropical with a little pepper on the nose. Nice mouthfeel and length, kinda juicy but fresh. Not much to really talk about in the mouth in terms of flavour, but good acidity and length lends itself perfectly to fried seafood. Kiddy safe, no sharp edges. And at 12.5% I really like this for casual lunch time drinking and snacking. 87 Pts.

Bodegas Pirineos Mesache Blanco 2007

img_4917To be honest, I was a bit dubious about this one. A blend of late harvested Macabeo with some Chardonnay & Gewurztraminer doesn’t usually get my juices flowing, and while this isn’t going to spur on a wild planting spree of Macabeo around the world, its a good drink. As a side note, this wine uses Normacork to seal the bottle. This is the only synthetic cork that I’ve seen so far that works well and looks somewhat normal. It doesn’t get stuck on the corkscrew either…

The nose is rich and full of lemon, melon and pear with freshly toasted spices. It has an odd sweet and sour thing going on in the mouth, acid cutting through oily texture. I’m a real sucker for these wines were texture and mouthfeel are emphasised, and this provides plenty to enjoy. More tart lemon with sweet melon in the mouth, a bit of herby gear and something a bit minerally to the acid. I’m sure plenty of people will hate this, it is a bit odd, but I quite like. An excellent match to some pan fried chili chicken. 87 Pts.

Duris Viura-Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Duris Viuba-Sauvignon Blanc 2005This is an odd little wine, it comes from a non DO area in Castilla y Leon and is a blend of Viura and Savignon Blanc.  Oh and its very cheap, under $10 at retail in Melbourne. I've heard about these great Spanish wines for under $10 in the US, and I was suckered in.  The good ones cost $20+ here.

Not a lot happening on the nose, a bit of passion fruit and white flowers, but a bit dull really.  Well balanced and fresh in the mouth, it has a great oily texture that hides some fennel seed, lemon and melon.  Finish is quite long for what it is.  For a tenner, its interesting, if a bit ho hum.  80 Pts.
