¡Noise!

Back from NZ

Picton, New Zealand

New Zealand is such a hard place to leave, great weather, food, views and a big range of Spanish wines at much lower prices than Australia thanks to a much more reasonable tax structure. Oh well, back to work. I should have a bunch of new stuff in to look at later in the week, so more notes will go up next week.

  2. I don’t mind the cold that much, so its fine by me. The price difference seems to be about 20% on the mid range wines, moving up to about 30% at the top end. Entry level stuff is a couple of bucks cheaper.

The guys at elmundovino put out the average score from their tasting panel so it tends to be a bit lower than most. They have posted a conversion to 100 points somewhere and 18 is about 94 from memory. But yeah, great site, I think they have the best coverage of Spanish wines anywhere.

  3. I get annoyed by how much more we pay for stuff here. I must try that site had a great Roda 1 03 the other week. Wish it was 30 per cent cheaper.

  4. Dave,

Amazing how heavily grog is taxed here. Does not look like there will be any reduction in this, given all the recent focus on problem drinking (good thing we drink such meagre amounts).

Looking forward to seeing some more holiday snaps. . .

  5. Yeah, I think high taxes on alcohol are here to stay. I can see both sides of the argument for taxes, but the government should really focus on the big issues (regulating high alc RTDs, setting marketing standards, education, depression/mental health services and promoting a positive drinking culture) with the $960 mil it collects from WET. But they still seem to be stuck in a “don’t piss it up too much or bad stuff will happen to you, just ask these footy players” mentality. The thing is, just about everyone knows that already.

Anyway, there are more photos on the flickr thingy on the side bar —->
