Bodegas y Vinedos Alion Reserva 2001

Alion Reserva 2001The 01 Alion has been heralded as the greatest wine to be wheeled out of the bodega and has had a raft of great reviews from all the big names. I've had a couple of of bottles over the past year and it's certainly worthy of all of hype, some critics going so far to say that it's on par with 1st Growth Bordeaux.  It seems to arrive in Australia about a year after release in Spain.  Not to worry, it makes it here and that is all that matters.

Deep ruby with a purple tint. The nose really grabs you with dark cherry, fresh dark currents, nutty espresso, dried herbs and a bit of pipe tobacco. With some time in the glass some floral notes appear and add to the complexity. In the mouth it's medium to full bodied, but silky, supple and mouth coating.  Layers of flavour and concentrated fruit, black currants and blackberry with minerals, licorice and a touch of sage and toasty oak.  Great structure and balance, lovely smooth tannins, and just the right level of acid. The finish is smooth and long.  Really enjoyable now, but there is huge potential here; this will be an exceptional wine in 5 to 10 years. Drink now til 2021. 95+ Pts.
