Albariño

Castro Martin 2006

Castro Martin Albarino 2005I think this is the last Albariño in the tasting pile  at the moment. I'll duck out and get some more over the Christmas break. This is the most fun albariño around, it has the most expressive albariño aromatic characters, doesn't break the bank and so easy to drink.

Castro Martin is made from estate owned vines in the Valle del Salnés, one of the coolest areas of Rias Brixas.  Most vineyards in Rias Brixas are quite small family holdings with the grapes sold off to the bigger bodegas or as part of Co-Op. While its not unheard of for a bodega to make a wine solely from its own vines, it is seen to be an additional sign of quality within the region.

A light straw colour, with the trademark Castro Martin nose of white peach, jasmine and honeysuckle with some green lemony goodness. One of the things I love about Albariño is the mouth feel, and this doesn't disappoint.  Slightly oily, but with just the right amount of acid to keep you mouth fresh and ready for more.  This bottle is still a little, its showing tangy lemon and apple with a bit of melon.  Fluffy white peach and musk sticks as it warms up a bit more.  A bit of sage and lemons on the finish. 90 Pts.

  1. They also run a psuedo blog, though there are no comments, and any attempt to communicate with them is met with suspicion. At least they’re almost trying.
I do look forward though to trying this wine though once the weather warms up a bit!

  2. The closure really puts me off. I hate these plastic things!

  3. Ryan: I hadn’t noticed the blog thing. Its a start and they look to be updating it fairly regularly.

Larry: Don’t let a small thing like a closure put you off! Actually the synthetic cork on these is not too bad, an improved version of the one in the 2005.

  4. Hi Guys

Well this is actually my website and blog - I am the one who created it, and my wife makes the wine!

I opted out of allowing comments on the blog simply because a mate of mine, who runs a similar blog has to put up with more crap than sensible comments. At least I do try to keep it up to date….

I am not sure why e-mails would be treated with suspicion, unless of course my spam filter is pulling them out.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the wine - the 2005 is still doing really nicely, even using a synthetic cork!

  5. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for stopping by, its always great to have the people involved in making the wines comment on the site (I’d prefer it if it wasn’t to defend yourself!). Comments or not, I like what you are doing with the blog. The ‘A Good Year” post is a good example (crap movie tho).

I had a look at the 06 and 05 “super tank” in a blind line up of Albarinos (and a load of other stuff) on Monday, both looking great, The 07 a bit fresher but the 05 more complex and fleshy. Not sure if the “super tank” wine was bottled at the same time as the regular one, but it looks great under synthetic cork.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  6. Hi Dave,

Thanks for your comment about the blog - it is supposed to be a bit light-hearted but serious at the same time. (I agree about the movie)

I also agree with your coments about the 05/06 comparison. The 06 is very attractive, because obviously its fresher, but I still don’t think it has quite the same ‘depth’ as the 05.

The 05 was stored in tank, and is a reasonably recent bottling (Dec 07 I think) - its had some good reviews this year - no doubt you’ve seen them on the blog.

    My best
    Andrew

P.S. I might be over for Scott Wasley’s annual tasting in June - will we see you there?

  7. Yep, you will most definitely see me there. It would be great if you could make it out.

    Cheers

    Dave
