Ribera del Duero

Condado De Haza Crianza 2002

This wine is from another one of Alejandro Fernández's projects, this time from Ribera del Duero.  100% Tempranillo that sees 16 months in new American oak.  Vintages from the mid 90s seem to be riddled with brett, but I can't see any in this wine, it looks clean and fresh.

The wine needed at least an hour in the decanter, so make sure to give it some time to open up.  With some extra time in the glass there is brambly fruit, leather, vanilla and a bit of coco powder on the nose.  Big and balanced in the mouth, with a wall of firm tannins that seem to soften with some time in the glass.  Mulberry and black currents dominate the mouth, with some leather, earth and star anise.  The finish is long with a hit of minerally acid.  A really enjoyable bottle that I'd drink over the next 3-5 years. Good value as well.  90 Pts.
