What can you say about cream sherry? It’s is the quintessential ‘Nana’ sherry. It’s what many people reference of when they think of sherry, the big jugs of McWilliams Cream Sherry sitting at the bottom of cupboard that their grandmother used ‘just for cooking’. More often than not, if I give someone a glass of good sherry, more often than not I’ll get a comment about drinking it with nana in the kitchen while no-one was looking. There are some amazing cream sherries on the market (this oloroso dulce is an example) Anyway, this is another blend of PX and palomino sherry, but it works a bit better than the last one.
Notes of dried fruit, mostly raisins, and wood with an almost malty, floral note. Quite nice really. But in the mouth it doesn’t follow through to the same extent. A burst of raisins and nuts on entry but it’s all too short. Viscus and kind of creamy in the mouth with some warmth on the finish. At this price you can’t really complain and Nana would love a sneaky bottle behind the cooking oil. 85 Pts.

I’m glad you are reviewing this as there’s no shame in this blend. Cream sherry was either ordinary or great in the past. Mainly blended in places like Bristol. On the Oz scene Bullers had a great wine for years - now labelled something else. Maybe it’s time has passed with Spain no longer worried about being UK centric, but cream sherry has provided some nice experiences over the years.
I admit to having a soft spot for Lustau’s East India sherry. That’s a nice one. Also, I wonder if using grenache in the Seppelt/Seppeltsfield oloroso actually is more of a cream style?
Although have to admit that nothing beats a true rare amontillado or oloroso for me
cheers
Carl
Larry, I think blending is a very hard thing to get right, but you’re right, there some really enjoyable cream sherries around.
Griff, I haven’t had east india solera for a while, I’ll have to grab a bottle. It depends on how they add the grenache, but from memory the seppelts oloroso is not that sweet?
I love the old gear, mainly amontillado but I do love a very old PX.
