Luis Pato Vinha Borrosa 2003The second of the pair, the Borrosa is another single vineyard baga wine from Luis Pato. The Barrosa vineyard is made up of 5800, 80 year old baga vines surrounded by pine trees in clay/linestone soil. While these wines are powerful and full of fruit, they are restrained, supple and stylish, almost burgundian in style. The Barrosa really shows its old vine pedigree with added complexity and depth of flavour.

Deep purple in colour. What a nose: violets, mulberries, plum with earth, mushrooms and loads of spice and herbs. There is a note of eucalyptus with a bit more air. Great mouthfeel, smooths and silky with great tannins and a touch of acid. The palate shows concentrated fruit, mulberry, plum, black current, cola. And mint, it may be too much for some, not me. The finish is very long. Beautiful wine. 92 Pts.

  1. Recently, I had the pleasure of tasting the Luis Pato Vinha Barossa 1995 and 2005 in a tasting led by the winemaker and owner himself, Mr. Luis Pato. The minty / eucalyptus notes that you tasted are apparently due to the vineyards being in close proximity to pine and eucalyptus trees; the grapes are normally picked in the morning, when the morning mist carrying these minty notes are still on the grapes - hence the flavours. The 1995 Vinha Barossa is truly superb, like a well-aged claret, and will continue to improve over the next 5 years or so. The younger wines definitely will reward careful cellaring.

  2. Thanks for the info, I had suspected something like that. Sounds like a good tasting. I’m planning to get to Portugal later this year, hopefully I’ll have time to visit Mr. Pato.

    I’m grabbing some these for the cellar, they look to be a good value, mid term cellar dweller.
