Marques de Riscal Reserva 2003

Marques de Riscal Reserva 2003If you are very observant you will notice that the thumbnail for this post is much better than normal.  That's mostly due to the iimage plug-in breaking with the upgrade to 2.3.  I did this one in Photoshop, I think I will keep it that way in the future.

Anyway on to the important stuff.  The 2001 vintage of this wine was a big hit, a kind of return to form for Marques de Riscal.  The 2003 is in the Marques de Riscal style, but not up to the 01 at this stage in the game.  I like it, it doesn't grab me at the moment.

Deep red in the glass, with a very good Rioja nose of varnishy mulberry and cherry, undergrowth and a touch of caramel and chocolate.  Quite young at the moment and showing a little bit too much acid at the moment.  There are some dusty tannins as well.  Tart blackberry and cherry on the palate with some sage leaves and pepper.  I have a feeling this will get better over the next couple of years, but for now it just doesn't have interest on the palate.  89+ Pts.

  1. Although I haven’t tasted this vintage yet your score surprises me. The Reserva from the overall weak ‘02 vintage just got a Decanter Award and was voted Best Value wine out of the 54 entries. BTW, were any ‘02 brought over by Toro at all?

  2. I’m not sure if that says more about Decanter or the wine :). At $45 you couldn’t call this a value wine anyway. The nose is great, but I found the palate flat and uninteresting. The conditions of the 03 vintage were more suited to the modern style wines I think.

89+ is a good score in my book, but perhaps not at this price range. Compare this to something like the Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2004 for about $10 less.

Yep, the 02 was around for a while, but I never got around to reviewing it.

  5. Very odd behaviour, but you should be able to find it at North Sydney Cellars. If they don’t have it in, I’m sure they can order it for you. If not send me an email and I’ll put you on to the importer.

  7. This is nearly on 90 for me. Pencilly and earthy with some chewy tannins (isn’t Dusty Tannins a porn star?) . Bit of brett here I’d say too. Not up to 2001 as you say.

  8. Sounds like the + was warranted then. Yep a bit of brett, but its kind a house style really.

I think Dusty has a few credits to his name, mainly with Tart Blackberry as co-star.

  10. Hi John,

If it was available at that price here, I’d be really happy with it. But its about double that here due to taxes etc. I’ll have to check and see if the 04 is out yet. It should be a cracker.

  14. The 04 is yummo. Better than the Roda Reserva and cheaper.

  16. I thought that would get your attention ;)

Pretty even actually and it depends on the style you prefer I think. Roda Reserva was a little more modern.

    cheers
