So, a new year and a bunch of new wines. I’ve got a stack of notes to get through over the next couple of weeks, then I’m off to Spain (with a quick trip to Poland on the way). Anyway on to the wine. I had a chance to catch up with Manuel Arias-Paz from Marques de Velilla late last year, a great guy, very passionate about Ribera del Duero and a real character (which you can see in this photo). They have embarked on a refresh of the vineyards and winemaking here, mostly along biodynamic lines but without the cow horn rubbish. Interestingly, the wine maker was in the Spanish rugby team and came out here. Who knew there was a Spanish rugby team?
The nose opens up with notes of vanilla coke, earthy red cherry and red currant, a bit of coffee grounds with some wild geranium and lavender. Tight and focused on the palate with juicy, juby fruit: blueberry and cherry, pen ink and sage. Lovely rustic, but fluffy tannins and a fine backbone of acid reinforcing the whole thing. This is right on the money. 90 Pts.

Can you tell me where I can purchase Spanish wines?
I live in Wollongong.
Also, how do Spanish wines compare to Australian wines for the same price, e.g. 2005 Penfolds 389 rated by Jeremy Oliver with a score of 95 and selling for around $30 to $49
Hi Frank,
I don’t know Wollongong that well, but if you have a look at the following link I’m sure you’ll find someone who can sort you out: http://www.tintoyblanco.com.au/where-to-buy-spanish-wine/
Value is very subjective, I can only really answer this question from my (very) biased point of view.
A good experiment for you would be to go and buy a bottle of Marques de Riscal Reserva 2004 ($45) or Pesquera Crianza 2005 ($45) and drink it side by side with the 389
Frank, wollongong retailers are not very kind to spanish wines, the one with the biggest range is thirroul cellars which is not to far and has about ten different wines good luck
This wine tastes even better on the 13th floor with a view of Surfer’s Paradise!
Sal, what are you doing on the Gold Coast? At least you’re drinking something decent for a change…
