I had a bottle of this about 3 months ago, unfortunately it was corked. Here is the replacement. This is a big, beautiful monster. Its also very young and needs to banished to the cellar for at least 5 years to sort itself out. The price is starting to get up there, I would personally go for Numanthia or Pago la Jara at this price point.
The book is The Spanish Cockpit by Franz Borkenau. Its a first person account of the Spanish civil. It’s more of a diary of his travels around Spain in ‘36 and ‘37 with the Government forces (the revolutionaries and ultimate loosers in the war) . An interesting read, but heavy going if you’re not familiar with the topic.
Deep and dark in glass with a powerful nose of coffee beans, coco, lashings of blackberry and dark cherry with nutmeg, sage and earth. This is a very serious wine, concentrated and powerful, rich and youthful. The palate shows a similar profile, but adds some hot tarmac and a few leafy herbs. A very long finish with a touch of minerals. It shut down about 3 hours in, this is one for the cellar. 92+ Pts.

Pintia 2005 is bigger monster…
Interesting that in Portugal, and in Spain, Pintia is much cheaper than Numanthia or Pago la Jara.
Nuno
Yeah, they all sit around the same price here. Pintia has had quite a bit prince increase over the past couple of years here, from $70 for the 2001 to $105 for 2004. Its about 25-28 Euros in Spain I think?
I am not sure where the 04 will go. So much oak.
There is a fair bit of oak there, I think it will integrate or at least tone down, there is a lot of fruit there to soak it up.
But why would you buy this over Alion?
Yes, Pintia is about 24-26 Euros, while Numanthia and Alion are around 35 Euros due to Mr. Parker.
05 was hotter than 04 but, still, a better vintage for Toro, or at least for Pintia.
If you have not read George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia it’s an excellent book about the Spanish Civil War. He went to Spain as a journalist to cover the war and ended up actually fighting.
