Rioja

Ramon Bilbao Viura 2007

ramon bilbao viura 2007One of the things I want to get my head around when I’m in Rioja next month is what is going on with white Rioja. There are a couple of modern versions, like this or Placet from Palacios Remondo, that really rock my boat.  Plus the traditional stuff like Lopez de Heredia’s Reservas and Gran Reservas, that are like nothing else on earth. Then there is Remulleri Blanco (It is a tasty blend of Vigonier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel, Marsanne and Roussane) which is something else altogether. I’m heading to all these places, so I should be able to get a good view of what is going on and where white Rioja is heading. Either that or I just get to drink some nice wines with friendly people.

The nose shows cedary oak with some crushed coriander seeds, pineapple and coconut with some lemon. Nicely textured and moving on to full bodied in the mouth, a long smokey finish. The palate shows more citrus fruit, lemons and limes, a little creamy. Clean and fresh with a bit of character. Stylish and highly enjoyable. Really tasty with some pan fried Flathead. 88 Pts.

    What about Portugal?

  2. Yep, next month. It’s a fairly quick trip this time around, but next year I will do portugal for sure!

  3. what’s your itinerary? You can’t miss out on Dinastia Vivanco’s winery and Museum of the Culture of Wine in Briones near Haro - honestly, you’ll love it (but I would say that, but it is true)

  4. I’ve got a week and a half in Rioja from the 14th. I’m overloaded with visits at the moment (I have 4-5 most days), but if I find a gap I’ll squeeze them in. I think I went there on my last trip tho…

  5. That’s a lot of visits, I hope you have a patient driver

I didn’t realise you’d been to Vivanco. Did you get a chance to check out the Coleccion Vivanco range? If not, drop me a line and I’ll arrange that if nothing else

I look forward to reading the results of your trip. I have loads of visits (Roda, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, ..) still to write up

  6. Dear Dave if you are coming to Rioja next month it would be a pleasure to show you at least one of our wineries like Faustino in Oyón or the cozy Campillo in Laguardia. Best regards

  7. Robert, Sara from Roda sent us there last time, a great place to visit, but no I didn’t get to try the Coleccion range. I’ll drop you an email if I can find space for them! We are staying in Abalos, so if I get keen one morning I might grab a bike and head down that way.

Federico, Campillo is next door to Artadi from memory? If so, I may be able to fit in a very quick visit on the 16th. I will send you an email.

  8. Exactly Dave, Campillo just in front of Artadi. I wait for your confirmation as I live in Madrid. Cheers
